Camarillo understands that strong economies are built on strong ideas.

The city’s creative sector plays a meaningful role in driving commerce, activating spaces, and attracting the kind of talent that fuels long-term growth. Through programs, exhibitions, and partnerships, Studio Channel Islands turns artistic innovation into real economic value for the community.

Artists as Businesses, Not Just Creators

One of the most important ways Studio Channel Islands contributes to Camarillo’s creative economy is by reframing how artists are viewed. Rather than treating artists as occasional exhibitors, the organization approaches them as economic actors.

“In an average year, we’ll represent around 600 artists through the gallery and our studios,” said Peter Tyas, Executive Director of Studio Channel Islands. “So that’s 600 businesses that are getting their profile raised through networking, exposure to an audience, and meeting customers.”

That framing shapes how the organization operates. Artists come to Studio Channel Islands not only to show work, but to learn how to function within the creative economy—how to collaborate, respond to opportunities, and position themselves for professional work.

Business Support Designed for Creatives

Artists are creators first, and business owners second. For many, the administrative side of their work—client development, marketing, and financial management—is necessary but secondary to the creative process itself. Studio Channel Islands bridges that gap by offering business support designed specifically for creative professionals including panel discussions, artist talks, and professional development sessions focused on how working artists manage their time and careers.

“All the information that an artist could possibly want is out there,” Tyas said, “but what is valuable to you right now?”

This personalized approach helps artists make informed decisions about pricing, promotion, and growth—decisions that directly affect their ability to earn income and sustain their practice.

Measuring Economic Impact

Studio Channel Islands’ economic contribution was calculated at $1.6 million in 2025, according to impact metrics developed by the leading nonprofit Americans for the Arts. That figure reflects a mix of direct and indirect activity, including artist payments, commissions, program delivery, and visitor spending.

Studio Channel Islands also contributes to Camarillo’s local economy by drawing people to the city. “Last year, we had 30,000 visits come through the gallery and the studios,” Tyas said. Visitors typically stay long enough to support nearby businesses, especially restaurants, which helps Old Town Camarillo thrive.

Why This Matters for Economic Development

Studio Channel Islands aids in business attraction and retention too. As one of Southern California’s more established communities, Camarillo benefits from thoughtfully built amenities that make the city appealing to both residents and newcomers.

Studio Channel Islands offers “a vibrant cultural scene where you can go and see a Grammy Award-winning musician, an internationally exhibited visual artist, all within a free-to-attend gallery. You can also see artists at work in their studios preparing for an exhibition or completing a private commission”

High-quality arts and culture amenities strengthen Camarillo’s value proposition for employers and employees alike.

Building an Inclusive Talent Pipeline

Access and equity are central to Studio Channel Islands’ role in Camarillo’s creative economy. Audience data shows the organization is reaching beyond traditional arts demographics. “Of our visitor base, around a third are coming from low-income households,” Tyas noted.

For emerging artists, Studio Channel Islands lowers barriers to entry through subsidized studio space and structured guidance on things like business planning and building foundational skills.

The goal, Tyas explained, is representation and long-term sustainability. By broadening access, the organization helps ensure that Camarillo’s future creative workforce reflects the full community.

A Strategic Asset, Not an Afterthought

Studio Channel Islands is not simply an arts venue. It is an organization that supports creative businesses, generates measurable economic impact, drives local activity, and enhances the quality of life that underpins long-term economic vitality.

As Tyas put it, “We play a seismically important role in the general economy of the city.”

Whether you’re an artist looking to grow a business, an employer evaluating quality-of-life amenities for your workforce, or a visitor seeking meaningful experiences, Camarillo’s arts institutions and community events make the city both vibrant and welcoming.

Studio Channel Islands anchors that energy with a year-round calendar that highlights the region’s dynamic creative sector:

  • Blackboard Gallery exhibitions (Tuesday–Saturday) showcasing local, regional, and international artists.
  • Open Studios (first Saturday of each month, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.) when up to 40 resident artists invite the public into their working studios.
  • Family art activities and classes for all ages, many offered free to spark creativity across generations.
  • Live performances and special events, from concerts to poetry readings that activate the gallery as a true community space.

The gallery is open Tuesday–Friday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m., offering ample opportunity to experience Camarillo’s creative heartbeat firsthand.
